East Bay Bicycle Path

September 6th, 2009 · Comments Off

The other day, a representative of the Rails to Trails conservancy contacted me because he was doing an online story about the East Bay Bicycle Path. Well, I thought, I should just write my own post on the subject!
For reference, here is my Flickr set of my EBBP photos these views are mostly of the [...]

Bike ride

July 4th, 2009 · Comments Off

Daughter got a new bicycle, and today (July 4) we took it for a spin on the East Bay Bicycle Path, which is one of those marvelous bits of local infrastructure that people tend to take for granted, but which makes living in this area a little more special.
Anyway, I digress. As we were getting [...]

Night Rider

November 13th, 2008 · Comments Off

Pictured is me in my night riding gear. I like to be as bright as possible on the road at night.

Double spotlight on front handlebars (unfortunately, only one works at the moment)
Three Hokeyspokes on the front wheel
Christmas Light set around the main triangle
Reflective safety vest
Rear blinky lights on helmet, seatpost, and vest

Portland cyclists

October 10th, 2008 · Comments Off

Doing some lighthouse photography in Maine. While driving in South Portland to the Portland Head lighthouse just around 6AM I was amazed to see many bicyclists on and around Cottage St, presumably heading to work at that hour. I should have counted them, there were dozens. Portland also has numerous bike lanes, including a prominent [...]

Bike Commuter Benefit

October 6th, 2008 · Comments Off

I’m not particularly happy that it was crammed into the bailout bill, but I am happy that the Bicycle Commuter Benefits Act was signed into law.
The benefit — up to $20 per month — begins with the new year in 2009. Employers may reimburse employees, tax free, for “reasonable” expenses related to their bike commute, [...]

Trip Report: Acadia

October 8th, 2007 · Comments Off

Acadia trip with JB
10/4/07 to 10/8/07 (Columbus Day Weekend)
I had suggested this trip to my old friend JB as kind of a reliving of our younger days. We hadn’t travelled together in a few years, and I hadn’t been to Acadia since 2003. A young person I knew spent a weekend in Acadia in late [...]

How to Ride Your Bike to Work

August 29th, 2007 · Comments Off

I couldn’t have said it better myself:
If I told you that I was going to give you a magic device that would save you money, save the planet, and, oh yeah, firm up that flab you have been carrying around with you for the last couple of years, what would you say?

Biking weather

August 18th, 2007 · Comments Off

As the summer comes to a close, the temperature gets a little cool, and the air is crisp, that’s biking weather! The kids and I did 14 miles on a beautiful local bike trail that we haven’t been to very often. In fact, it was Daughter and Son’s first time, and my 2nd time there.

Afterward, [...]

Family Vacation: Cape Cod 2007, Part II

August 10th, 2007 · Comments Off

Cape Cod Part II: Province Lands
I’ve wanted to bike the Province Lands Bike Trail since our first trip to Cape Cod over 10 years ago. This week I finally got my chance. With Son in the Trail-A-Bike, the two of us rode across some spectacular scenery.
Son gets ready:

Son had a really spectacular time. He [...]

Me and my shadow

July 28th, 2007 · Comments Off

That’s me and Son tagging along on the local bike path. The Adams Trail-A-Bike isn’t that unusual, to my mind, but it gets a lot of comments.
