Photo workshop

April 28th, 2008 · No Comments

Last week, I attended a photo workshop with famous landscape photographer Jack Dykinga. The workshop was local, and we went to the following locations at sunrise and sunset:

Beavertail State Park (with the lighthouse); sunrise and sunset
Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge; sunrise
Windmill in Jamestown; sunset
Black Point (on Ocean Road in Narragansett); sunrise

Dykinga is an amazing photographer and a really interesting guy. He has traveled the world, and come back with amazing photographs. He has worked for some of the best in the business, including National Geographic and Arizona highways. Oh, and he is also a Pulitzer Prize winner.

He’s also a good teacher. His manner is approachable and affable. He certainly knows what makes a good photo, and he knows how to make you feel like you have the ability to take one, as well. He’s also a raconteur who’s filled with interesting stories. He also has incredible reserves of energy, getting up before dawn and going full-tilt till after sunset.

As for me, I’m not sure I came back with photographs that are worthy of the instructor, but I definitely felt that I learned a thing or two. One of those things is that photography is often about the edges of things, the place where things meet, rather than just photos of the things.
