The whole family took a trip to New York’s great American Museum of Natural History. Daughter had been there a year ago, and she was excited to return. She took lots of photos of the gemstone collection, which I couldn’t believe was not against museum policy. But nobody stopped her.

This was Son’s first visit. I really wanted to take him, since for the past six months or so he’s been on a complete dinosaur obsession. Dinosaur books, dinosaur toys, the works. Well, he was completely overwhelmed with excitement at seeing the stunning dinosaur skeletons at the musum. The more excited he got, the more he kept upping the ante, calling out dinosaur types that he wanted to see. First it was the Allosaurus. Then he wanted a Stegosaurus. And a Triceratops. And of course, his favorite, Parasaurolophus. It’s pretty amazing that the museum’s collection is so complete that there was a specimen of everything he could think of; in many cases, a complete skeleton of each. At the end of the visit, though, he surprised me a bit when we asked him his favorite exhibit; it wasn’t the dinosaurs at all. His favorite was the famous life-size model of the blue whale in the Oceans exhibit.
