I finally managed to take Daughter to the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. She was definitely entranced by the dinosaur skeletons, and gave an audible gasp at the lifesize model of the blue whale. I think she was a little disappointed by the Rose Center for Earth and Space, mostly because it had [...]

Spooky House 2005
November 20th, 2005 · Comments Off
Here is this year’s Halloween “Spooky House”, which I finally got around to photographing today. It’s based on an actual victorian Second Empire style mansion in Auburn, Maine. It’s guarded by an ogre and populated by a ghost, two skeletons, and some other freaks. See more photos of this and a few other of my [...]
Examples of Monopod in use

I shot both of these at the same event, using a monopod: 1) The orchestra was on a stage about 3 feet high. The only way to get the shot was to raise the camera up over my head on a monopod, using self-timer (I didn’t have a remote release at the time). 2) After [...]

Dan Zanes in Concert
November 12th, 2005 · Comments Off
We’ve been listening to the music of Dan Zanes for at least a year in our house. Today we got the chance to see him in concert in Somerville, MA, near Boston. It was such an enjoyable show. There were at least ten performers, counting all the special guests, and they played with great energy [...]

I thought this local Queen Anne Victorian was perfect. So did neighbor Eugene Lee, a broadway set designer who used this house as inspiration for the set of Broadway’s “Ragtime.” Which I actually managed to see on Broadway.

Advice to a beginning photographer on iStock

Often newbie iStockphoto contributors ask how they can improve. It amazes me that many of these folks are new not only to shooting stock, they are new to photography in general. They think they can create usable stock by walking around their neighborhood or the local park, looking for photos to happen. They don’t quite [...]

Son pooped in the potty today! Twice! This is the first time he’s pooped in the potty since July.
Son’s tooth decay
November 3rd, 2005 · Comments Off
I was shocked to learn that Son has significant tooth decay, in at least three teeth in three quadrants of his mouth. I guess I shouldn’t have been. It seems almost everything the guy eats is loaded with sugar, right down to yogurt and chocolate milk. And we haven’t exactly been strict about his brushing [...]
